Jathan's Arrival

[Jathan Gregory]

Jathan sat on the couch in the weird farmhouse. His eyes still stung from crying. His dad had dropped him off on this island and said, "This is your new home, now. Go to the farmhouse and ask for Chiron. He'll explain." Then he drove off. Jathan couldn't help feeling abandoned. He cried as he walked up the hill. The tree was a blur. He stumbled down through the fields to what looked like a house. Wiping his eyes, Jathan knocked on the door. Receiving no answer, he opened the door entered. He might get in trouble for entering without invitation, but then his father might come back for him. He sat on the nearest couch and waited for someone to come and find him.

Syl thought she saw something move. She started towards the Big House, and slowly peeked between the crack in the doors.
Locks of blonde hair was the first thing she saw. Then his slightly wet pale blue eyes.
Syl's eyes widened as she thought of one thing: Half-blood.
Pushing past the door, she let herself introduce herself.
"Hey, what's your name?"
She sounded so abrupt.

Jathan was so surprised, that he answered. "I'm Jathan. Why am I here? My dad said a guy called Chiron would explain it all. I just wanna go home."

[Syl]

Syl's heart climbed up to her throat.
"I know this is weird. And from you, I'm a stranger. But believe me." She drew in a silent breath. "This is your home."

Jathan just stared at the girl. "Why?" That one question, that he had asked so many times before, only this time it meant so much more to him.

[Syl]

Syl heard her heartbeat.
This was hard to explain. She hesitated. "Jathan, right?" Her voice sounded unsure. "This is all of our homes. This is the only place in the world that's safe for kids like us. Tell me--do you have dyslexia?"

"Yeah... Is that relevant? People like us. What's so different about us?" Jathan was only getting more confused. If there was a way to add to the suspense, Jathan didn't know.

[Syl]

Syl was avoiding saying the term Greek or demigod, but...
"Okay. This is gonna sound crazy." She warned. "We... we are demigods, children of Greek gods. This camp is made specially for kids like us, because our aura, or scent, attracts monsters and apparently we're good food to them. Camp Half-Blood is the only place you are safe, but sometimes, even barely."
Had she been too quick?

"Wait... What sort of 'Special' are we talking about here?" Jathan said, suddenly doubting the girl's sanity. He did not want to be stuck in some camp with a bunch of damaged people. The girl was nice and all; but she was probably crazy. "Are you the only one here....?" He trailed off, realizing that he had forgotten to ask her name.

[Syl]

He didn't believe her. Jathan probably thought she was crazy. She didn't blame him.
"Syl." She offered. "Sylvania Summers. And no, I'm not the only one... here." For a moment she paused, thinking of what to say. "If you're not convinced, then why did your dad bring you here in the first place?"
Her voice became gentler towards the end; she figured it might be a touchy subject to some people. Their parents... a place they never knew...

"He just said something about...." Jathan said, trying to recall. "He said, 'It's too risky now.... You have to get somewhere safe.' Then he brought me here. What's too risky? Why? I mean, I saw a weird lady with greenish skin, I tell Dad, and he immediately takes me here. Was she dangerous or something?"

[Syl]

Syl was tensed, and she didn't even realize it.
Was it fear, obliviousness, or sheer wonder? Syl couldn't even imagine anymore.
A monster with green skin...? Gorgons?
"A lady with green skin. Of course she wouldn't be dangerous." She said sarcastically. "But for 'too risky'... You've seen a monster. It's not long before they sense you, too."

"Green ladies. Huh, so I'll avoid them in the future. But say if I am a child of a Greek god, would unnatural powers go with it? Like bursts of strength?" Jathan asked, remembering how he would help his father in his carpentry. One time, a two hundred pound stack of building materials fell on his dad's leg. Jathan was only twelve at the time, but he still lifted it off of his dad. Could that be a sign of supernatural parentage? He never knew his mother. And his dad would just say that she had to go away. His sister's mother was a different mother who had died before Jathan was born, so he knew that she was not his mother. Come to think of it, his mother could be anyone. But even a Greek goddess?

[Syl]

Well, Syl certainly didn't get boosts of magical strength.
"Maybe." She said carefully.

"In class, I read about gods and goddesses of strength. I might be the child of one of them." Lost in speculating about his parent, Jathan completely forgot that his dad dumped him at this weird farmhouse, without an explanation. "Who's your god parent?"
